Top 10 Questions To Ask Your Window Salesperson

When shopping for new windows, you want to be well-informed.  The window industry offers a wide selection of window products and companies to choose from.  Here are the top 10 questions you should ask your window salesperson to ensure you're making the best decision for your home:

1.      What types of windows do you offer?

Ask about the different styles, materials, and brands available. This will help you understand your options and find the best fit for your home's design, style and your personal preferences.

2.      What are the energy efficiency ratings?

Inquire about U-factor, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), and air leakage ratings. These factors affect your home's energy consumption and comfort level.  You want a window that will perform in your geographic location.

3.      What kind of warranty is included?

Understanding the warranty coverage and duration is crucial. Ask about both product and installation warranties.  You need to know what is covered and what’s not. Find out if the warranty is transferable to a new homeowner.

4.      What is the total cost, and what does it include?

Request a detailed breakdown of costs, including materials and any additional fees.  Do not accept a total number scratched down without details on the window brand, type, specs, and warranties.  Does the cost include permitting, additional installation materials, delivery fees, etc.?

5.      Are you licensed and insured?

Ensure the company is properly licensed and insured to protect yourself from potential liability issues. Always check out the company's reviews, BBB status, and endorsements for peace of mind.

6.      What is the installation process like?

Get details on the installation timeline, what to expect during the process, and how they handle unexpected issues.  Ask about the installation method for brick vs siding vs stucco openings.  Ask about the materials, trash removal, clean up. Who will manage the scheduling and oversight of the project?

7.      Who takes the measurements to place the order?

Understand the measurement process used to place your custom window order.  Does the company use the salesperson or installer’s measurements? Does the company have a policy on measuring the window to 1/8” of an inch for a perfect fit without gapping, or does the company believe in measuring short and filling the gap around the window?  It’s always best to get an exact fit for optimal performance.

8.      Is permitting included?

Most cities require a permit and inspection for window replacement.  In addition to being a requirement, the permit process ensures the improvement project is being checked to meet code, energy efficiency requirements, and quality installation.  It’s additional peace of mind for the customer.  Does the company handle pulling the permit and scheduling the inspection with the city?

9.      Are there any current promotions or discounts available?

Don't miss out on potential savings – ask about any ongoing promotions or seasonal discounts.  Ask about any financing offers or payment plans.  Inquire if the company offers a price match guarantee if you have another quote for a comparable product.  Ensure you are getting a fair price and best value for your purchase.

10. How long will it take to receive and install the windows?

Understanding the lead time for ordering and scheduling installation can help you plan accordingly.

The window industry offers a wide array of products and companies to choose from for your window replacement project.  It’s always best to get several quote for comparison since quality, price, and offerings can largely vary.  Knowing what questions to ask to ensure a true apples to apples comparison of your options if key to making the right decision.  Take advantage of the free consultations and quotes to gather all the information needed for a well-informed decision.
